How it came to be

The Cape Floristic Region at Africa's southern tip is the smallest of the world's six floral kingdoms. It covers under 0.5% of Africa's area yet holds nearly 20% of its flora: about 9,000 species, some 69% of them endemic.

Most of it is fynbos, a fire-prone shrubland rich in proteas, ericas and restios. Eight protected areas were inscribed in 2004, and a 2015 extension enlarged the property to about 1.09 million hectares in 13 clusters.
