How it came to be
Baldwin I of Jerusalem took the port of Acre in 1104 after a four-year siege, and it became the Crusaders' main harbour. Third Crusade forces under Richard I of England and Philip II of France recaptured it in July 1191.
The Mamluk sultan al-Ashraf Khalil conquered Acre in 1291 and destroyed most of it. In the 18th century Daher al-Umar and Jazzar Pasha raised walls, a citadel and mosques on the buried Crusader foundations, creating the walled town seen today.
