How it came to be

The Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley is a glacial valley in southeast Andorra covering about 9 percent of the country. Its southern ridge is the border with Spain, and the valley can be reached from the rest of Andorra only on foot.

People have used its mountain resources for thousands of years. The high summer pastures have been held in common since the Middle Ages, a system that has lasted more than 700 years. Shepherds spent the summer in small stone huts with turf roofs and made cheese from the milk. Iron was smelted on the river bank in a Catalan forge typical of the Pyrenees until it was abandoned in 1790, and the forests were managed for charcoal until the 19th century.

The valley was inscribed in 2004, and in 2006 its buffer zone was extended to the Spanish border. A management plan took effect on 28 December 2011, with a focus on reviving traditional farming, which has declined.
