How it came to be
In the Qionglai and Jiajin mountains of Sichuan, protected areas cover 924,500 hectares. More than 30% of the world's giant pandas live here, in the largest remaining continuous panda habitat, and it is the most important source for the captive breeding population.
In 1869 the French missionary Armand David found the giant panda in Baoxing County in the Jiajin Mountains and reported it to the West. Besides pandas, the sanctuaries hold 109 mammal species, among them the red panda, snow leopard and clouded leopard, and 365 bird species.
Outside the tropical rainforests it is one of the botanically richest places in the world, with 5,000 to 6,000 plant species recorded, including relicts such as the dove tree. The sanctuaries were inscribed in 2006, and a recovery plan was carried out after the 2008 Sichuan earthquake.
