How it came to be

The Rainforests of the Atsinanana are six national parks along the east of Madagascar: Marojejy, Masoala, Zahamena, Ranomafana, Andringitra and Andohahela. Most of the forest survives on steep slopes of the eastern escarpment and mountains.

Madagascar split from other landmasses more than 60 million years ago, and its plants and animals evolved in isolation. Endemism runs at about 80 to 90 percent across groups, and all five Malagasy primate families live in these parks. Of the island's 123 non-flying mammal species, 78 occur inside the property.

Only 8.5 percent of eastern Madagascar's original forest remains. The parks were inscribed in 2007 and were on the List of World Heritage in Danger from 2010 to 2025.
