How it came to be
On 16 August 1328, Luigi Gonzaga led a revolt that ousted the Bonacolsi family from Mantua. Under Gonzaga rule the city was reshaped, and Giulio Romano built the Palazzo Te for the family between 1525 and 1535.
In 1556 Vespasiano Gonzaga began building a new town at Sabbioneta, about 30 km away, and kept at it until his death in 1591. With its grid streets and walls, it was inscribed together with Mantua by UNESCO in 2008.
