How it came to be
In 1565 the Knights of St John beat back a massive Ottoman siege of Malta. On 28 March 1566 Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette laid the foundation stone of a new fortified city, which took his name.
Pope Pius V sent the military engineer Francesco Laparelli, who laid out a grid plan; after his death in 1570 the Maltese architect Girolamo Cassar carried on. Some 320 monuments stand within about 55 hectares.
