How it came to be

In October 1910 Carl Benscheidt, manager of a shoe-last factory, fell out with the founder's son, left, and set up his own company, Fagus. He bought land across from his old employer in Alfeld and hired the architect Eduard Werner, but disliked the look of Werner's design.

In January 1911 Benscheidt approached Walter Gropius, who with Adolf Meyer redesigned Werner's facades. Building began that May, and from the winter of 1912 the two were the sole architects. The slender structure, large glass walls and unsupported glass corners anticipated the Bauhaus and modernist architecture.

With the First World War in between, the interiors and additions were finished in 1925. The ten-building complex was protected as a monument as early as 1946, and it is still in operation. It was inscribed in 2011.
