How it came to be
On 5 July 1628 Charles Wolverstone arrived with 64 English settlers. They first called the spot Indian Bridge after a rough bridge they found, and the name Bridgetown followed a new bridge built in 1654.
The port became a hub for sugar and for enslaved Africans shipped to Barbados and the Americas. In the 18th and 19th centuries St Ann's Garrison grew to house the British Army and Navy's Eastern Caribbean headquarters.
