How it came to be
Los Glaciares National Park lies in the Patagonian Andes of southern Argentina. Ice covers about half of it, and 47 large glaciers flow from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, a remnant of Quaternary glaciation.
The 30 km Perito Moreno Glacier periodically dams an arm of Lake Argentino until the ice wall bursts, first recorded in 1917. The park was created in 1937, many place names come from the Aonikenk people, and UNESCO listed it in 1981.
