How it came to be

Hamburg's Speicherstadt, the warehouse city, was built between 1885 and 1927 on a string of narrow islands in the Elbe, stretching about 1.1 km. It has 15 very large warehouse blocks and six ancillary buildings over some 300,000 square metres, and part of it was rebuilt from 1949 to 1967.

Next to it, a district of large office buildings grew up from the 1920s to the 1940s. At its centre stands the Chilehaus, commissioned by the shipping magnate Henry B. Sloman, who had made his fortune trading saltpetre from Chile, and finished by the architect Fritz Höger in 1924. It is clad in about 4.8 million dark bricks, and its sharp corner is often compared to a ship's prow.

The Speicherstadt was listed under Hamburg's heritage law in 1991 and the office district in 1983 and 2003. They were inscribed together in 2015.
