How it came to be
In 1859 the Agri-horticultural Society was granted 32 hectares at Tanglin and founded the present Singapore Botanic Gardens. It grew from a pleasure garden in the English landscape style into a colonial economic garden and then a modern botanic garden.
A first Superintendent of Gardens was appointed in 1875. Henry Nicholas Ridley, its first scientific director, led research into rubber cultivation, and the gardens played a key part in the spread of rubber plantations in South-East Asia in the early 20th century.
Its National Orchid Garden pioneered the breeding of hybrids, and in 1981 the hybrid Vanda Miss Joaquim was chosen as the national flower. The gardens were inscribed in 2015 for their preserved landscape and continuity of purpose.
