How it came to be
The Lut Desert in south-eastern Iran is a desert of wind-carved landforms. The inscribed area covers about 2.28 million hectares.
About a third of it is taken up by giant yardangs, wind-cut ridges known locally as kaluts, up to 155 metres high with ridges that run for more than 40 km. Some 40% is sand sea, with active dunes up to 475 metres high, among the largest in the world. A land surface temperature of 70.7°C, one of the highest on Earth, has been recorded inside the area.
The Lut Desert was inscribed in 2016.
