How it came to be

Lençóis Maranhenses lies on the coast of Maranhão in northeastern Brazil. Rivers such as the Parnaíba carry sand to the shore, and winds push it up to 50 km inland, building a 90,000 ha dune field, the largest in South America.

From about January to June, rain fills the hollows between dunes with lagoons up to 3 m deep that vanish in the dry season. Protected as a national park since 1981, the area had over 4,000 residents when UNESCO listed it in 2024.
