How it came to be

The Treaty of Giyanti on 13 February 1755 split the Mataram Sultanate, and Prince Mangkubumi became Hamengkubuwono I, first sultan of Yogyakarta. The Kraton palace was built in 1755–1756, with the sultan credited as its chief architect.

The sultan placed the palace and city on a line linking Mount Merapi in the north with the Indian Ocean in the south. The 6 km north–south axis runs from the Tugu monument to the Krapyak hunting lodge and was inscribed in 2023.
