How it came to be

On the campus of Kazan University stands an observatory built in 1837. It has a semicircular façade and three towers with domes for astronomical instruments.

In 1897 the astronomer Vasily Engelhardt gave the instruments and library of his private observatory in Dresden to the university. An imperial decree in 1898 granted money and land, and a new observatory in the forest west of the city opened on 21 September 1901. Its founders were Engelhardt and Dmitry Dubyago, and it used a meridian circle made in 1845 and a heliometer installed in its own pavilion in 1908.

Dubyago died in 1918 and was buried in a crypt on the observatory grounds. Engelhardt, who died in Dresden in 1915, was reburied there in 2014. Both observatories survive with their instruments and now serve mainly for teaching. They were inscribed as a World Heritage site in 2023.
