How it came to be
The Finnish architect Alvar Aalto designed buildings from 1928 to 1988 with his first wife, Aino Marsio-Aalto, his second wife, Elissa Aalto, and the staff of the Aalto studio, which ran from 1923 to 1994. The furniture and interiors company Artek was founded in 1935.
The site brings together 13 buildings and ensembles in town and country, among them Paimio Sanatorium, Villa Mairea, Säynätsalo Town Hall, the Aalto House and Atelier, Finlandia Hall and the Church of the Three Crosses.
It was inscribed in 2026.
