How it came to be

The fifth Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, built this fort as the palace of his new capital, Shahjahanabad. It was completed on 6 April 1648. The design is attributed to Ustad Ahmad Lahori, also credited with the Taj Mahal. Beside it stands Salimgarh, a fort built by Islam Shah Suri in 1546.

In 1739 Nadir Shah, having defeated the Mughal army, plundered the fort and carried off the Peacock Throne. In 1760 the Marathas stripped and melted the silver ceiling of the Diwan-i-Khas to pay for the defence of Delhi. After the British defeated a Maratha army in 1803, the East India Company took over its administration. Following the uprising of 1857 the last emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, was exiled and most of the buildings inside the walls were demolished by the British.

On 15 August 1947 Jawaharlal Nehru raised the Indian flag above the Lahori Gate. Indian independence was first celebrated at the fort and is still celebrated there each year. It was inscribed in 2007.
