Ajanta Caves

How it came to be
About 30 caves were cut into a cliff above a horseshoe bend of the Waghur River. The first were made for Buddhist monks around the 2nd century BC under the Satavahanas, and Cave 10 bears a donor inscription from that period.
A second phase came in the 5th century under the Vakataka king Harishena, adding new halls and murals. Scholar Walter Spink argued that most of this work happened between about 460 and 480. UNESCO listed the caves in 1983.
