How it came to be
In 1631 Mumtaz Mahal, wife of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, died giving birth to their 14th child. In 1632 the emperor began building her tomb beside the Yamuna River in Agra.
More than 20,000 workers, including artisans from across the empire, Central Asia and Iran, took part. The mausoleum was finished in 1648 and the outer courtyards around 1653; Ustad Ahmad Lahori is regarded as the chief architect.
