How it came to be

Mughal emperor Akbar revered the Sufi saint Salim Chishti, who had foretold the birth of a son. After Prince Jahangir was born in 1569, Akbar began building a religious complex at the saint's village of Sikri.

From 1571 to 1585 the new city served as the Mughal capital, and the 40 m Buland Darwaza marked Akbar's Gujarat campaign. When he left for Punjab in 1585 the city emptied, possibly because its water supply failed.
