How it came to be
Sangay National Park spans the eastern Andes of central Ecuador from 900 m to 5,319 m. It holds two active volcanoes, Sangay and Tungurahua, the extinct El Altar, and 327 lakes.
Sangay began forming about 500,000 years ago, and its first recorded eruption was in 1628. The park was created in 1979 and listed by UNESCO in 1983, but road building kept it on the danger list from 1992 to 2005.
