How it came to be

Native Americans lived in the region for at least 11,000 years. The Washburn Expedition of 1870 named Old Faithful for its regular eruptions, and Ferdinand Hayden's government survey of 1871 produced a report that helped convince Congress to protect the area.

On 1 March 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant signed the act creating the world's first national park. It holds more than 300 geysers and over 10,000 geothermal features, and in 1978 it was among the first sites on the World Heritage List.
