How it came to be

Vatican Hill held a Roman cemetery where tradition places the grave of the apostle Peter. Around 326, Emperor Constantine built the first St Peter's Basilica over the spot believed to be that tomb.

Rebuilding began in 1506, and the new basilica, shaped by Bramante, Michelangelo and others, was finished in 1626. The 1929 Lateran Treaty turned these 44 hectares inside Rome into an independent state.
