How it came to be
In 1164 Archbishop Rainald of Dassel brought relics of the Three Kings from Milan to Cologne. To house them, Archbishop Konrad von Hochstaden laid the foundation stone of a new Gothic cathedral on 15 August 1248.
Work stopped in 1473, leaving the south tower unfinished. The rediscovered medieval façade plan helped restart construction in 1842, and the cathedral was completed on 15 October 1880, 632 years after it began, at about 157 m tall.
