Yosemite National Park

How it came to be
Starting about two to three million years ago, at least four major glaciations reshaped this part of the Sierra Nevada. Ice turned river valleys into U-shaped canyons and exposed granite walls such as Half Dome and El Capitan above a valley about 1 km deep.
The Ahwahneechee lived in the valley before the Mariposa Battalion entered it in 1851. Abraham Lincoln signed the Yosemite Grant in 1864, and Congress created the national park in 1890 after lobbying by John Muir.
