How it came to be

Muhammad I, founder of the Nasrid dynasty, began building the Alhambra on a hill above Granada in 1238. In the 14th century Yusuf I added the Comares Palace and Muhammad V the Palace of the Lions, while the Generalife served as the emirs' country retreat.

The Albayzín quarter on the facing hill is thought to trace back to the 11th-century Zirid rulers. In January 1492 the last Nasrid sultan, Muhammad XI, surrendered Granada to Ferdinand and Isabella, and the Palace of Charles V was begun inside the Alhambra in 1527.
