How it came to be
This wetland formed in a natural depression at Bharatpur in Rajasthan, and by the end of the 19th century it was managed as a duck-shooting reserve of the Maharajas of Bharatpur. Dykes and sluices created areas of different water depth that drew birds.
Through the efforts of the ornithologist Salim Ali and others it became a sanctuary, then a Ramsar wetland in 1981 and a national park in 1982, when hunting ended. It lies on the Central Asian flyway, and about 375 bird species have been recorded.
It was inscribed in 1985. It was known as the only wintering site of the central population of the Siberian crane, but the last of these cranes were recorded in the winter of 2001-02. The park depends on water released from a reservoir outside its boundary.
