How it came to be
Iguaçu Falls formed where the Iguaçu River cuts across basalt of the Serra Geral formation, about 1,000 m thick. Along a 2.7 km edge, 150 to 300 cascades fall depending on flow; the name means "big water" in Guarani or Tupi.
Engineer André Rebouças campaigned to protect the falls from 1876, and Brazil created the national park in 1939. With Argentina's adjoining park it protects about 250,000 ha. UNESCO listed the Brazilian park in 1986.
