How it came to be
The Chimú began building Chan Chan near present-day Trujillo, Peru, around AD 850. Covering about 20 km², it is considered the largest earthen city of pre-Columbian America, with an estimated 40,000 to 60,000 residents.
Nine walled compounds served as royal palaces, and an 80 km canal brought river water to the fields. The Inca conquered the Chimú around 1470. Erosion from El Niño rains has kept the site on the danger list since its 1986 inscription.
