How it came to be

Hollókő in Nógrád County, northern Hungary, is a village of the Palóc people. Work on a castle on the hill above it began in the mid-13th century, after the Mongol invasion, and the castle is first recorded in 1310. The Ottomans took it in 1552, and for about 150 years it changed hands between Ottoman and Hungarian forces.

At the end of Ottoman rule in 1683 the castle and the old village were abandoned, and the present village grew up below. In 1782 it was still a one-street village, but it spread in the 18th and 19th centuries and by 1885 had nearly its present layout. Its partly wooden houses burned again and again, last in 1909, and were rebuilt in the traditional way.

By Palóc custom the oldest houses line the main street and later generations built behind them, with whitewashed walls and porches under overhanging roofs. Protection of the village began in 1972, and in 1987 the village, the castle ruins and the surrounding fields and woods were inscribed.
