How it came to be
Manu National Park in southeastern Peru rises from Amazon lowlands near 150 m to Andean grasslands at 4,200 m. It became a nature reserve in 1968 and a national park by decree on 29 May 1973.
Covering about 1.7 million ha, it holds more than 800 bird and 1,300 butterfly species. Indigenous groups such as the Matsigenka and Yora live inside, including some in voluntary isolation. UNESCO listed it in 1987.
