How it came to be

According to tradition, the Indigenous prospector Diego Huallpa found silver on Cerro Rico in 1545. A Spanish mining town was founded at the foot of the mountain that same year, about 4,000 m above sea level.

Twenty-two reservoirs powered 140 ore mills, and mercury was used to extract the silver. Under the mita forced-labour system, about 13,000 Indigenous men were drafted each year. The town was listed in 1987 and put on the danger list in 2014.
