How it came to be

The Yongle Emperor moved the Ming capital from Nanjing to Beijing and began the Forbidden City in 1406. Over a million workers are said to have built the 72-hectare palace, finished in 1420. Fourteen Ming and ten Qing emperors were enthroned there.

In Shenyang, Nurhaci of the Later Jin began a palace in 1625, and Hong Taiji added to it. After the Qing moved to Beijing in 1644 it became a secondary residence. Beijing was inscribed in 1987 and Shenyang added in 2004.
