How it came to be
Brazil's 1891 constitution already called for moving the capital from Rio de Janeiro to the central plateau. President Juscelino Kubitschek, who took office in 1956, made it a campaign promise, and construction took about 41 months.
Lúcio Costa's plan, chosen in a 1957 competition, crosses a monumental axis with a curving residential axis. Oscar Niemeyer designed the main buildings, and the city was inaugurated as capital on 21 April 1960.
