How it came to be
Local Maya of northern Yucatán built the city beside two natural sinkholes, or cenotes. Chronicles date its founding to AD 415–435 or around 455, and it grew into a major regional capital around 800–900.
Its centre is El Castillo, a stepped pyramid about 30 m high with nine terraces. No major monuments were added after the 13th century, the city declined quickly after about 1440, and UNESCO inscribed it in 1988.
