How it came to be
William the Conqueror began a castle on the north bank of the Thames late in 1066, soon after the Norman Conquest. Its central keep, the 27-metre White Tower, is usually dated to around 1078 and was overseen by Bishop Gundulf.
Henry III and Edward I enlarged the fortress in the 13th century, fixing much of its present layout. Over the centuries it served as royal palace, prison, mint and record office, and the Crown Jewels have been on public display there since 1669.
