How it came to be

Tradition dates the first games at Olympia, held in honour of Zeus, to 776 BC. The Temple of Zeus went up in the mid-5th century BC, and its gold-and-ivory statue of the god by Phidias was counted among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

The last ancient Olympiad took place in 393 AD, and 6th-century earthquakes and up to 8 metres of sediment buried the sanctuary. The Englishman Richard Chandler identified the site in 1766, and large-scale German excavations began in 1875.
