How it came to be
Moscow first appears in a chronicle in 1147, and Prince Yuri Dolgorukiy is recorded enlarging its hilltop fort above the Moskva River in 1156. Dmitri Donskoi replaced the oak palisade with white limestone walls in 1366–1368.
Between 1485 and 1495 Ivan III brought in Italian builders, including Pietro Antonio Solari, to raise the present 2,235-metre wall and its towers. On Red Square, St Basil's Cathedral was built in 1555–1560 to mark the conquest of the Kazan Khanate.
