How it came to be
On a rocky ridge inland from Rauma in south-western Finland, 33 stone burial cairns stand in clusters. The Scandinavian Bronze Age ran from about 1500 to 500 BC, and 28 of the cairns date from its early phase, the rest from the early Iron Age.
Two of them are unusual: the Long Ruin of Huilu, an elongated cairn enlarged in stages, and the Church Floor, a flat-topped rectangular cairn of 16 by 19 metres, said to be the only one of its kind in Scandinavia.
The archaeologist Volter Högman excavated four cairns in 1891, and eight have been investigated so far. The site was inscribed in 1999 as a record of burial practices more than 3,000 years old.
