How it came to be
Horezu Monastery is a Romanian Orthodox monastery in the town of Horezu, Vâlcea County, in Wallachia. Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu founded it in 1690, and it was completed in 1697.
It is the leading example of the style named after him, the Brâncovenesc style, known for balanced design, fine stone carving, religious painting and votive portraits. In the 18th century the school of mural and icon painting set up here became known across the Balkans.
The monastery was inscribed in 1993. The town's craft of Horezu ceramics is also on UNESCO's intangible heritage list.
