How it came to be

The Parisii lived here from about the mid-3rd century BC, and the Île de la Cité marked a river crossing on a trade route. Julius Caesar conquered the area in 52 BC, and the Roman town that grew on the Left Bank was called Lutetia.

Work on Notre-Dame began on the island in 1163, Haussmann rebuilt the centre in 1853–70, and the Eiffel Tower rose for the 1889 exposition. The banks from Pont de Sully to Pont d'Iéna were listed in 1991.
