How it came to be

Mining at Rammelsberg may have begun in the late 7th century. The chronicler Widukind of Corvey recorded that Otto the Great had its silver deposits opened around 968, and Henry II began an imperial palace at Goslar in 1005.

In the Upper Harz, miners built 143 ponds, about 500 km of ditches and 30 km of tunnels between the 16th and 19th centuries to drive pumping wheels. Rammelsberg yielded almost 30 million tonnes of ore before closing in 1988.
