How it came to be

Virunga National Park in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo was created in April 1925 as Albert National Park, the first national park in Africa. It covers about 7,800 km², from swamps at 680 metres to the snowfields of the Rwenzori Mountains at 5,109 metres.

Its Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira volcanoes are the two most active in Africa and account for about two-fifths of the continent's recorded eruptions. The park shelters about a third of the world's mountain gorillas and some 20,000 hippos, the largest concentration in Africa, along with 218 mammal and 706 bird species.

Inscribed in 1979, the park was placed on the danger list in 1994 because of civil unrest. That year about 850,000 refugees from Rwanda lived around its borders. Attacks by armed groups have continued since, and 175 rangers had been killed by April 2018.
