How it came to be

K'gari, off the Queensland coast, is about 123 km long and the largest sand island in the world. Rainforest up to 50 metres tall grows directly on its dunes, and its 40 perched lakes make up half of all those known on Earth.

In the language of the Butchulla, the island's traditional owners, K'gari means "paradise". It was long called Fraser Island after Eliza Fraser, shipwrecked there in 1836. Logging ended in 1991, and the name K'gari became official on 7 June 2023.
