How it came to be

Spaniard Juan de Ampíes founded Santa Ana de Coro on 26 July 1527. In 1531 it received the first bishopric on the American mainland, and it served as the first capital of Venezuela under Spanish rule.

About 600 historic buildings of adobe, rammed earth and wattle-and-daub survive in Coro and its port, La Vela. Dutch styles arrived via Curaçao after the mid-1600s. Heavy rains in 2004–05 put the site on the danger list in 2005.
