How it came to be

Ha Long Bay holds about 1,600 limestone islands. Thick limestone was eroded into a drowned tower-karst landscape that is thought to have taken shape over roughly 20 million years. The name means 'descending dragon'.

Prehistoric cultures lived here, from Soi Nhu (about 18,000–7,000 BC) to Cai Beo and Ha Long. In 1288 Tran Hung Dao destroyed a Mongol fleet on the nearby Bach Dang River using hidden stakes. The bay was listed in 1994.
