How it came to be

The Nazca Lines lie on a dry plateau about 400 km south of Lima. Between roughly 500 BC and AD 500, Paracas and Nasca people are thought to have cleared dark surface stones to expose paler ground beneath.

The lines total more than 1,300 km and include over 70 animal figures; the hummingbird is 93 m long and the condor 134 m. Their purpose is still debated. UNESCO listed them with the Palpa geoglyphs in 1994.
