How it came to be

In the 7th century King Songtsen Gampo, who unified Tibet, married the Tang princess Wencheng and the Nepalese princess Bhrikuti. He is said to have built a palace on Red Hill around 637, and he founded the Jokhang temple in Lhasa.

The 5th Dalai Lama began the present Potala Palace in 1645, and his government moved into the White Palace in 1649. The Red Palace followed in 1690–94. The Potala, Jokhang and the 18th-century Norbulingka were listed in 1994, 2000 and 2001.
