How it came to be
Los Katíos National Park lies in the Darién Gap of northwest Colombia and adjoins Panama's Darién National Park. Rising from 50 to 600 metres, it takes in the Serranía del Darién to the west and the floodplains of the Atrato River to the east.
Sitting at the southern end of the land bridge between the Americas, the area has acted as a filter for animals moving between the continents since the Tertiary. It is the only place in South America where many Central American species occur, among them the American crocodile, giant anteater and Central American tapir, and about 450 bird species, some 25 percent of Colombia's birds, have been recorded.
The park was created in the 1970s and enlarged in 1979 to its present 72,000 hectares. It was inscribed in 1994, and was on the List of World Heritage in Danger from 2009 to 2015.
